What’s the Best Formula? What New Moms Want to Know

March 11, 2025

When you're a new mom, everything feels like a huge and anxiety-causing decision, and especially when it comes to what your baby eats. If you’ve found yourself googling furiously, with a knot in your stomach, trying to figure out what formula is the best, you’re definitely not alone. We’ve all been there and so have many of the moms we help. Formula-anxiety is a real thing, and many moms feel like they don’t have the info they need to make an informed decision.

Is Organic Formula Actually Better?

Organic formulas are often made with fewer processed ingredients and less corn syrup; two things some parents try to avoid. They still go through some level of processing (it is formula, after all), but the ingredient list tends to be more minimalist overall.

Many babies also tolerate organic formula a little better. That means fewer tummy troubles, less gas, bloating, and those life changing 3 a.m. poop explosions (if you haven’t experienced this yet, consider yourself lucky).

Non-organic formulas are still safe and nutritious. They’re regulated and fortified with the same essential vitamins and minerals. But organic might just offer a gentler start for your baby’s digestion; and your peace of mind.

Is It Really Worth the Extra Cost?

For a lot of parents, yes. The price difference between organic and standard formulas isn’t massive; think a few dollars more per large container. And many parents say the improvement in their baby’s feeding experience makes it more than worth it. Even better: you can often find coupons and discount codes, so don't skip that Google search or parent Facebook group before hitting “add to cart.”

Goat’s milk formulas can be a game-changer for babies with sensitivity to cow’s milk. Some formulas focus on issues like reflux, gas, or constipation, so it might take a little trial and error to find your baby’s perfect match.

And yes, formulas are designed to mimic breast milk as closely as possible. So if you’re combo-feeding or switching from breastfeeding, you’re not “failing” you’re feeding. Period.

Is It Really Worth the Extra Cost?

The formula you start with probably won’t be the one you finish with, and that’s completely normal. Babies’ needs change as they grow. Most brands have different stages to suit newborns, infants, and toddlers.

And don’t forget: switching formulas isn’t a crime. If your baby isn’t responding well to one, it’s okay to change. No guilt, no pressure. Parenting is hard enough without turning formula into a battlefield.

Final Thought For Tired Moms

Here’s the truth: both organic and non-organic formulas can support a healthy, growing baby. Organic might offer a few added perks - cleaner ingredients, better digestion - but it’s not the only good choice.

The best formula is the one your baby tolerates and the one that works for your family. Your pediatrician, a nutritionist, or a lactation consultant can all help guide you. And remember, this decision isn’t permanent. You can (and probably will) adjust along the way.

So take a deep breath. You’re doing great. And whether you’re popping the lid off that pricey German goat milk formula or sticking with a tried-and-true store brand, you’re feeding your baby with love—and that’s what matters most.
